The Art of Slowing Down
Artist · educator · Needham, MA · since 2002
Long before there were galleries,
humans pressed pigment
into stone walls.
Not because they were artists.
Because they needed to make a mark.
That impulse is still in you.

My name is Ariel.
I have been making things
with broken materials
since 2002.
I am a mosaic artist, a Certified Color Expert, and the founder of AFS Mosaics. For over two decades I have worked with glass, ceramic, stone, and wire — breaking things apart and rebuilding them into something whole.
MetaPainting is the practice I built from all of that. And the reason I built it is a story worth telling.
I didn't come to art
through a class.
I came through grief.
Following September 11, 2001, my world cracked open. I lost friends. The noise was relentless — news on a loop, a new compulsion to avoid tall buildings and crowded places, a body that couldn't find stillness anywhere.
I sold my television. I cleared my kitchen table. And I started breaking things — glass, ceramic plates, wire, stones — anything I could get my hands on. It was cathartic. Physically and emotionally satisfying in a way nothing else was.
Eventually I realized that learning how to break things with intention was probably in my best interest. So I dove deep — the way I always do when a subject takes hold — and by early 2002 I was obsessed. I started showing work. Then teaching.
The more I made, and the more I shared it, the more I recognized something undeniable: this practice was returning people to themselves. The calm it gave me transferred directly to my students. It quieted the noise. It anchored something.
I wanted to understand why. So I applied to Harvard's Arts in Education program, earned my Master of Education, and spent a year as a research intern at Project Zero — looking for the language to describe what I already knew in my hands.
What I found confirmed it: making art doesn't just feel good. The research on arts and human healing had been quietly building for decades. I had stumbled into the middle of it — and I wasn't leaving.
"The calm it gave me transferred directly to my students. It was like I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing."
Permission. Permission to make a mark without needing to be an artist. Permission to not know what you're doing. Permission to feel something shift — even slightly — in the direction of calm. The word calm is not a tagline. It is a lived truth that emerged from 22 years of making things and watching what happens to people when they do the same. You don't have to arrive as an artist. You just have to arrive.

Learn about sessionsEverything here lives under one belief —
Color + Connection + Calm
is not a tagline. It is what art can do.
I am glad you are here. Whether that is a kit for your kitchen table or a session for your community — I hope something on this site speaks to you. The mark-making impulse that has been in us since the cave wall hasn't gone anywhere. It's just been waiting for permission.

Ariel brings everything — the hand-cast ceramic tiles, the curated palettes, the brushes, the guidance, and the calm. Your guests arrive as themselves and leave as artists. No experience required. No wrong strokes. Just color, connection, and the rare pleasure of making something beautiful together.
Sessions run 1 to 2 hours and are designed for groups of 8 or more. Ariel travels to your location — your home, your office, your event space — or you can host your gathering at the Myotech Wellness Studio in Dedham, a beautifully curated space perfectly suited for mindful experiences.
This experience is perfect for —
Honor the people you love with an experience they’ll carry long after the party ends. Everyone paints. Everyone connects. Everyone goes home with something they made.
A team that makes something together leaves differently than one that sat through a presentation. MetaPainting is a genuine reset — creative, calm, and surprisingly powerful.
MetaPainting is a natural companion to any wellness or spiritual retreat. The rhythmic, meditative practice deepens presence, quiets the mind, and opens the heart — exactly what retreat participants come for.
Book clubs. Friend groups. Synagogue sisterhoods. Neighborhood associations. Any gathering of people who want to slow down together and make something beautiful in the process.

In their own words
What happens when you
slow all the way down
From people who showed up, picked up a brush, and left changed.
Our MetaPainting evening with Ariel was very special. She created a calming and welcoming space for my friends and me to celebrate our friendship and uniqueness. Her guidance was gentle and inspiring, and she made even the most hesitant among us feel creative and confident. It wasn’t just a painting session — it was a beautiful experience of connection, laughter, and presence. We left feeling lighter, more grounded, and more deeply connected to ourselves and each other. It was unforgettable.

Private group session
I attended an “Art Night with Ariel” with the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Shalom in Needham. There were many special aspects of this experience, among them the ability to let go of my own inhibitions about “getting it right”. Together, the women created a magnificent shared tile scape. It was fun, relaxing, and totally tapped into folks’ creative energy. Thank you Ariel, for guiding us through this relaxing way to connect with each other and with our inner calm.

The MetaPainting session was very calming. It felt so freeing to have permission to create without overthinking or planning everything out. I loved the balance of painting with the group and then painting on my own.

MetaPainting session
Our staff really enjoyed our MetaPainting session with AFS Mosaics. The atmosphere that Ariel created was relaxing and thoughtful and our team came out with beautiful work. We were also able to ship a kit to a colleague out of state and they joined in by FaceTime. Highly recommend to others!
